Dental Care for Your Child

At Ideal Image Dentistry & Spa, it’s no question that we love our patients. We especially love working with children!

We are often asked by our patients what age a child should begin seeing a dentist. It’s commonly agreed that your child’s first dental visit should be at 12 months old [source]. The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend taking your child to their first dental appointment no later than age 2 [source].

The first visit is typically quite quick and lasts no longer than 30 minutes. Dr. Brady will quickly examine your child’s teeth, jaw, bite, and gums. We understand your child will be nervous and anxious to be done so we keep our appointments as brief as possible.

Dr. Brady will discuss healthy habits to begin with your child and how to keep their new teeth healthy and clean. Scheduling routine dental cleanings will help build confidence and keep your child’s teeth healthy as they come in.

We recommend our patients be seen for cleanings every 6 months to one year.

Here are some quick tips to keep your child’s teeth healthy:

  • Brush your child’s teeth twice a day.
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste only if your child is old enough to spit out the toothpaste. The fluoride will harden the enamel making them stronger and healthier!
  • Show your child how to brush their teeth and help them each time. Learning how to brush their teeth properly is so important for a healthy mouth!
  • Never give your child milk or juice at nighttime. The sugar in the drinks will decay their teeth.
